Yoga Poses to Prepare for the New Year


As we close out another year and begin letting go of what no longer serves us, we open our hearts to the new year. So how can our yoga practice prepare us for this? By focusing on the balance between opening and closing. This means filling your yoga practice with forward bends, back bends, twists, and counter twists, as well as opening of the hips and heart. Perhaps you might want to set some yoga goals for the new year. See our yoga resolutions for some inspiration.


Here are some of our favorite yoga poses to prepare you for the new year ahead:


Warrior 2


This is a perfect balance between maintaining a connection to the past with a strong intention for the future. Balancing your weight in the middle will ground you in the present as your back leg and back arm provide a firm anchor to the past.


Forward Folds


Having your head below your heart is going to calm your nervous system. Blood will gently rush to your head, bringing clarity with it.


Spinal Twists


Spinal twists are great for wringing out the toxins. It’s the perspective shift of a twist. By twisting back to one side, then twisting back the other way, we really get a 360-degree view of our lives.


Gate Pose


This pose is to symbolically open the door for all of the possibilities this year may bring.
